What is Central Heating?
Central heating is a method of whole-home heating in which warm water circulates through a closed network of pipes, carrying heat around the home. The heat source warms the water circulated through the pipes that lead to radiators or to the pipes laid in the floor for underfloor heating. The diagram below shows some of the main components of a central heating system.
Heat Source
Usually a diesel boiler, gas boiler, or air-to-water heat pump is installed in a convenient location, often in the laundry, garage, or outside the home for easy access and efficiency.
Distribution
Insulated pipes distribute water from the heat source to emitters. Underfloor heating uses a manifold to distribute water from the heat source through floor pipes.
Emitters
Emitters are a means of releasing heat from the heat source into the rooms. Options include underfloor pipe, radiator panels and towel rails (in bathrooms).
