Hydronic Cooling
Year Round Comfort
Staying warm in winter is important, but Kiwi summers can be just as challenging—and that’s where cooling comes in. We’ve stepped up our game to offer easy, effective ways to keep your home comfortable when the temperature rises. Whether you’re looking for gentle, energy-efficient background cooling or fast, responsive air conditioning, there’s a solution that fits your home and lifestyle.
Our cooling systems use two innovative approaches: Radiant and Active Cooling. Radiant cooling quietly absorbs heat through floors, walls, or ceilings, keeping spaces comfortable without blowing air around. Active cooling uses fan coils to circulate cool air quickly, giving precise control even on hot, humid days.
Keeping Cool
Jason thought hydronic heating was all about staying warm. Turns out, it’s got a cool trick up its sleeve. The same orange pipes that heat your home can chill it down when summer strikes. Hydronic heating and cooling — comfort that’s clever, quiet, and completely Kiwi-approved.
Cooling Considerations
New Zealanders are showing greater interest in cooling, especially for bedrooms where summer heat can cause sleepless nights. While heating remains more critical overall due to our climate and higher annual demand, the smartest choice is a system that provides both heating and cooling. When planning cooling, it’s important to consider design factors early in the project, as these can greatly reduce the cooling load. Below, we’ve highlighted the main cooling considerations to keep in mind when designing a comfortable home.
Our experienced engineers take these factors into account to recommend the best radiant or active cooling system to complement your central heating, ensuring you get your preferred type of cooling and the most efficient system possible. CHNZ Cooling Options
Central Heating New Zealand offer two ways to cool your home:
- Radiant Cooling uses chilled water through floors, walls, or ceilings to directly cool the space.
- Active Cooling uses chilled water with fan coils to cool the air in each room
Both options integrate with our heat pump systems, creating a complete heating and cooling solution. Homes with radiant heating can also enjoy gentle cooling during warmer months.

Central Heating New Zealand's Cooling Guide
Want to keep your home cool and comfortable this summer? Our new CHNZ Cooling Guide makes it easy. It explains the different types of cooling systems, how they work, and what to think about when choosing the right solution for your home. Full of helpful tips and clear advice, it’s your guide to staying cool all year round.
Radiant Cooling
Inslab Underfloor Cooling
Inslab underfloor systems now deliver both heating and cooling for year-round comfort. In winter, warm water is circulated through the slab, providing even radiant heat. In summer, the same air-to-water heat pump operates in reverse cycle, circulating chilled water through the pipe loops. This lowers the slab temperature and creates consistent, comfortable cooling without draughts, noise, or mechanical air movement.
VarioComp Underfloor Cooling
Central Heating New Zealand’s VarioComp Floor Heating System is perfect for renovations or homes with low weight limits. Installed over solid or timber floors, its water-based design works with many energy sources for future flexibility. Warm water pipes deliver natural, even heat, while added insulation reduces heat loss and improves efficiency. VarioComp offers healthy, reliable warmth and a smarter heating solution for New Zealand homes.
Wall or Ceiling Cooling Panels
Central Heating New Zealand’s ModuleWall and ModuleCeiling systems deliver year-round comfort. Water-based pipes heat walls or ceilings evenly in winter, while the same systems cool rooms in summer without the harshness of traditional air conditioning. Ideal for homes, offices, or apartments, they provide healthy, consistent temperatures, energy efficiency, and even acoustic benefits for a smarter living environment.
Active Cooling
Surface Mounted Fan Coil
Surface mounted fan coils sit on your wall or ceiling, delivering heating or cooling to a single room. Each room needs its own unit, with airflow reaching 2–4m. High units work best for cooling, low units for heating, and ceiling options are available. Perfect for retro-fits, they’re easy to connect to pipes and power. Control is simple via onboard or remote controllers.
Built-In Fan Coil
Built-in fan coils sit hidden in walls or ceilings, with only the supply and return grilles visible. They deliver stronger heating and cooling than surface units and can serve a single room or multiple spaces. Ideal for seamless designs, they require careful planning with your installer. Each unit is controlled via a wall-mounted controller, adjusting temperature and fan speed while following the main system’s operating mode.
Ducted Fan Coil
Ducted fan coils sit hidden in walls or ceilings, delivering heating or cooling to multiple rooms through discreet grilles. Ideal for larger homes, they provide higher airflow than built-in units and can meet most of the home’s needs with just one or two units. Easy to maintain, each system is controlled via a wall-mounted controller, setting temperature, fan speed, and overall system operation.
