Heritage building

Situation:

Built in 1882, the Bond Store was designed by Frederick de Jersey Clere. In 1972 the Wellington Maritime Museum was established at the southern end of the building. In 1999, the whole building was refurbished and earthquake strengthened and reopened as the Museum of Wellington City and Sea. 2015 marks 150 years since Wellington was made the capital city and Wellington’s Museum gift to celebrate the occasion was ‘The Attic’ – a permanent exhibition on the fourth floor telling more of the fascinating stories. Approach:

The attic was reconfigured to increase the museum’s display space by nearly a third. Temperature and humidity in the space were required to be accurately controlled to ensure the exhibition was protected from damage. eCubed’s solution was a cascade of gas boilers to provide space heating via 2 large heating coils in the rooftop AHU. Central Heating New Zealand supplied a cascade of 4 Baxi Duo-tec MP 110kW boilers along with a cascade flue system to allow a single external flue penetration. During the works, ABS temporarily installed the boilers in a container and connected these to the system so that heating was retained to the building throughout the construction process.

Outcome:

To ensure the museum stayed open, consultants worked collaboratively with Naylor Love to ensure minimal disruption to visitors. Central Heating New Zealand Worked closely with Advanced Building Services to find solutions that meet the stringent demands of this project resulting in a reliable boiler cascade solution.
